âWell, if we are not to play games, then stop it with the secrets. I know you two were talking because that is what we do. Iâm a warrior in training now too. I deserve to know whatever it was you two said,â Katyana said firmly.
âYou want to know what we were talking about? Fine,â Vasco shrugged with ease. âWe were talking about Aunt Lorraine. I still donât trust her for putting you two in danger.â Blahom knew that Vasco hated lying to Katyana, but a half-truth was better than a whole lie.
âWell, I don't trust her because she slept with our father. The same as my mother did.â The room was silent for a moment. âLetâs not play games.â Katyana stared them in the eye and didnât say anything else.
âVery well Katyana. Let us stay focused. You will learn to leave people, conversations, and emotions behind that don't belong on the battlefield.â Vasco broke eye contact and moved on.
Blahom could feel Vascoâs anxious energy as he taught her and Katyana about the old Zaed vessel. As they walked throughout the ship once more, the creaking grew louder, and the ship, while stagnant, started to shift slightly, as if it would break suddenly. As Blahom grew more anxious with the shipâs grim creaking, she grew more anxious with her brother and sister. She knew that Katyana would never be the same and it pained her. But if Vasco was correct, then the war would end, and perhaps everything would return to how things were. She loved the idea of stopping this ridiculous training and getting back to dancing.
In the midst of the chaos, she comforted her own soul with solemn thoughts of finding time to fall in love. Her mind flashed to Rasheedâs face. She imagined his kind smile and strong arms, then pushed the image away and tried to focus on the task at hand.
Everything hinged on this simple plan of Vascoâs working. Blahomâs mind was buzzing with the new information.
